How to Identify Genuine & Authentic Pet Food in India

Popular pet food brands are sometimes copied, refilled or sold after expiry, especially online at prices that look too good to be true. The good news: most fakes give themselves away if you know where to look.

Check the seller

Buy from the brand's own store or an authorised retailer.
Be careful with prices far below everywhere else. Big discounts on a premium brand can mean old stock or fakes.
A real seller gives you a proper GST invoice and a clear return policy.

Check the pack

The seal. It should be the brand's own factory seal, with no tears, glue marks or re-sticking.
The print. Logos, colours and text should be sharp. Blurry print, spelling mistakes and off colours are warning signs.
The details. Look for MRP, net weight, batch or lot number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and the maker's or importer's name and address. These are required on packaged goods in India.
The dates. Dates should be printed cleanly, not stickered over. Make sure they make sense: the expiry should be well ahead.
Codes. Many brands print a QR code or helpline. Use it to check the product if you are unsure.

Check the food

Smell: fresh, not sour, rancid or musty.
Look: even size and colour, no dust, clumps or mould.
Feel: dry kibble should be dry and crisp, not soft or oily.
